Rubin is a 20th century crossing of Syrah x Nebbiolo, created in Bulgaria in 1944. I’ve enjoyed some vintages of this wine from Rossidi a great deal, but this 2017 feels slightly flat and hollow, leading with caramel and cacao notes rather than the exuberant fruit that I recall in previous vintages.
The fruit is noticeably more savoury and dusty than Rossidi’s Mavrud, which for now would be my pick for drinking pleasure. Still, this is a wine to check again in a year or so.
